GOJO was founded in March 1946 on the heels of WWII. It was a time when women stepped into the workforce to fill roles that men had traditionally held. GOJO co-founder Goldie Lippman (pictured in 1958, left) was one of those women; she was a supervisor on the floor of a rubber factory in Akron, Ohio, then the “rubber capitol” of the world.

Since February, demand for hygiene products – especially hand sanitizer and surface disinfectant – has been exponentially higher than any time in history. Throughout the pandemic, we have continually evolved our response to direct product to the most needed places. We first adapted our production capacity and distribution to meet increased demand from front line responders in healthcare, grocery, and U.S. military during lockdowns. Shortly after, we further adapted to the staggering demands of the post-lockdown economy that reopened businesses, schools, restaurants, and other institutions.

Every year, Earth Day serves as a reminder to support environmental protection and appreciate the world around us. The first Earth Day was in April of 1970, a time when environmental activism and civil rights led to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (1970) and the Clean Water Act (1972). As we approach the 50th anniversary of celebrating the nation’s first Earth Day, we are again battling two existential crises – one we’re familiar with, climate change, and a new one we are still grappling to understand, a global pandemic.
