If you’re like us at Team GOJO, good hand hygiene is something you think about every day. More likely, though, it’s something that is not always top of mind.
That’s why there’s a special day dedicated to stop and consider the huge impact this simple action can have on all our lives – and ensuring it’s always at the forefront of patient care in hospitals and healthcare settings.
That day is World Hand Hygiene Day, and it takes place every May 5. It isn't just a moment to reflect on the critical importance of hand hygiene; it's a global rallying cry.
More Than a Day
World Hand Hygiene Day was established by the World Health Organization to spotlight the importance of hand hygiene, especially as a critical part of healthcare.
Through its annual campaign and distribution of useful hand-washing educational materials, WHO seeks to build a culture of safety and quality in which hand hygiene improvement is given high priority.

While World Hand Hygiene Day largely focuses on healthcare, everyone can play a part May 5 and beyond by being an example of good hand hygiene. Take time to wash your hands throughout the day (and don’t forget to sing “Happy Birthday” twice!); carry trusted hand sanitizer for those moments you aren’t near a sink (do you know how many germs are on a dinner menu?); and demonstrate to those around you how easy it is to build good hand hygiene habits.
